Simple Algorithms & Music that You Learn that Learns You

So I have heard of this or something similar before, but have not been to Pandora in a great deal of time.

Holding true to form with my algorithmic mind I was almost more interested in the related recommendations than the music...although music makes me happy :)

I started skipping a bunch of songs and after about 10 to 12 they stated their license limits the number of songs you can skip in an hour.

Part of me wants to test the nearby computer to see if the limit is IP based or computer based :)

Do you know Yahoo Launch have a similar thing? They put the ads between the songs though (just started listening to Pandora so haven't discovered yet if it does the same) and their suggestions are sometimes totally unrelated (at least to me) - this one is a cool one, never heard of it before, thanks for sharing. As far as I remeber, Yahoo had no limits on skipping songs - haven't used it for a good while so can't be sure - I had to skip every second song, like ;-)

Pandora seems way more relevant and I just love their explanation of why they play me each song :-)

This reminds me of one thing - some years ago (around 2001?) there was a site called Music Buddha - they were suggesting you songs based on the style you selected but they played only about 30 seconds of a song. Then I think the developer sold it to somebody and the site disappeared. Wonder if it's used in any of the existing things now :-)

On the other hand, Yahoo lets you vote for ach song and if you rate it low they don't play that song to you anymore and I think they also take it into consideration when suggesting other songs. Have you noticed if skipping songs in Pandora has any effect on further songs they suggest? (Oh yes I just noticed voting options in Pandora... as for ads - yep I have created me an account just now and that's where they mention ads - haven't heard/seen any of them yet so wonder what they will be like)

As to Pandora, guess it would be cool if they also let you display soem information about the song/artist - heck that could even be done by linking them to something like allmusic.com (BTW almusic.com has a system of sorting their stuff with an option of suggesting similar/related albums/artists/mods etc - only they don't play anything)

And no, the registered account - at least the fre one - doesn't give you any additional options except for the ability to listen to it without them stopping you to create an account...

All in all, thanks - you just showed me a new toy for the day :-)
